Smart Platform Solutions for Parking and Charging – Lessons Learned on Connecting Legacy Infrastructure with Digital Mobility Services

How can existing parking infrastructure be successfully connected with modern digital mobility services such as electric vehicle charging, booking platforms, and third-party apps? This session explores key learnings from a real-world platform development initiative aimed at bridging legacy parking systems with service-oriented mobility ecosystems.

The presentation addresses common industry challenges such as interoperability between hardware and software, integrating charging infrastructure into traditional parking operations, data standardization, and balancing operational efficiency, user experience, and sustainability.

Based on practical experience from a collaborative development project, the speakers share which architectural and organizational principles proved critical when building scalable, open platforms in the parking and mobility domain. Particular attention is given to:

• Connecting legacy parking systems with digital services without full system replacement
• Designing open platforms that allow future integration of external mobility and payment services
• Managing complexity when combining parking, charging, and digital access models
• Lessons on collaboration between infrastructure operators, technology providers, and mobility stakeholders

The session is intended for parking operators, cities, mobility service providers, and technology stakeholders who are facing similar transformation challenges. Attendees will gain practical insights into how platform thinking can support the evolution toward more connected, sustainable, and user-centric urban mobility ecosystems.
